1913–1932 — The Original Church: Mission Dolores

Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church traces its roots back to the fall of 1913, when a small mission—known as Mission Dolores—was founded as an adjunct to St. Mary’s Church in Victoria, Texas. Established to serve Spanish-speaking Catholics, the mission quickly became a place of worship, fellowship, and community.

In those early years, Mission Dolores offered spiritual comfort and belonging to families eager to grow in faith together, laying the foundation for a parish that would flourish for generations to come.

1932–1952 — The Second Church

In 1919, Mission Dolores became a regular parish, and its name was officially changed to Our Lady of Sorrows. On February 22, 1930, the church building was partially destroyed by fire. Undeterred, the faithful rebuilt, enlarged, and rededicated their church that same year.

These years were marked by growth, faith, and unity. The parishioners’ devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows strengthened as they worked together to build a lasting spiritual home for future generations.

1952–1999 — The Third Church

By the early 1950s, Our Lady of Sorrows had once again outgrown its existing space. The decision was made to construct a new church rather than expand the old one. The result was a stunning brick building in Spanish Renaissance architecture, completed in 1952.

By the late 1990s, the parish had grown to over 1,500 registered families. In October 1998, devastating floods caused significant damage to the structure. While repairs were underway, termite damage was also discovered, leading to the building being declared unsafe and closed to the public.

In June 1999, after nearly half a century of worship and community, the third church was demolished. Though the physical building was lost, the parish’s faith and determination endured, paving the way for a new beginning and a renewed vision for the future.
